GM app tips

I tend to get questions about how to a GM position quite a lot. Honestly, there are A LOT of factors involved in the process, and includes such things as server knowledge, game knowledge, grammar and spelling....hell, even luck and just plain good timing can be a factor as well.

So let's start a thread about tips to increase your chances of success at getting a GM position. It might not happen at this server, but it will improve your chances across the board.

I'll start:

*If a server has a forum, it's in your best interest to be active in it to set an example of how active you are. this does not you should spam, but you should contribute meaningful posts. It will be show proof of how active you are in the community.

*Make sure you have a good command of the English language. This includes grammar, spelling, and syntax. Obviously, u wil not wan 2 type liek dis, cuz it very unprofessional & look vry slopy. You want to look good and be understandable.

*Get to know the staff of the server. This does not mean bug the hell out of the owner and the other GMs whenever you get the chance. Ask for help from staff when you need it, befriend them, offer to help with anything if they need it. This does not mean suck up to the GMs ("omg ur da nicest gms ily u rock! dis server is da best"). flattery is nice but doesn't increase your chances of becoming GM.

*Make sure you want to become GM for the right reasons. If you sincerely want to help noobs all day and catch hackers, you're on the right track. If you've never been a GM before, but you help the server a lot as a player and think you can be even more useful as a GM, you're on the right track.

If you want to be GM simply for the power and prestige it holds....then you need not apply.


*If you have been a GM or if you are a GM at other servers, always document proof by taking screenshots or some form of visible evidence like videos or forum links or something. Even if you say you've been a GM at like, 2-5 different servers, if you don't have proof, it's not very believable. upload your proof to sites like photobucket. "My pc got reformatted so I lost all my ss" is either a sad, unfortunate excuse, because now you can't prove it, or it is a lie. I would bet that a good chunk of players who've used that in their app have lied about it.


*keep your app readable* break down huge paragraphs into smaller chunks. Don't use combinations of colors that are hard to read (like yellow font on a white background or something dumb like that).

I lol'd. if anyone has any more tips, feel free to contribute, I left some out in case anyone had a better way of saying them.

What if you're like, friends with over half of the active staff and half of the admins. But one of the owners really doesn't like you for certain reasons.
And you've also been a GM on the server during certain "events" and nobody remembers it.

Where do your chances go from there?

Good Question. bear in mind that although these tips may increase your chances, there are always other factors to consider.

In that case, it would depend on how influential that person is. If he or she is the main owner, you're screwed.
If the owner who doesn't like you is not the main owner,then it depends on if the main owner will listen to him/her. If they make decisions together, you're probably not getting GM.

If the main owner is the only one who calls the shots, and the other one you pissed off is only a figurehead, then you probably still have a shot at it. That's my hypothesis anyway.


Whenever you get an opportunity to help out ingame or something, take the time to save a few screenshots and upload them to photobucket. A good rule of thumb is that if you think a conversation or situation ingame is important, it probably is.

I have a tip too. Don't beg to become a gm in your ap. It will reduce your chances to almost 0%

I am no GM but a good player in General who is helping somebody find there way should be polite, have proper grammar and make it sound as professional as you can...and it is not enough just knowing about what the person needs help with, you have to sound like you know to so you can relay information in the clearest way. don't be like, "oh go to this map, fight these monsters. Then go here." make it sound more professional it should sound something like this, "I suggest this monster map for your certain level<map name>, up to this level <level number> then when you get to that level, I suggest this map <map name>. I hope that you find your way."

Well that's a given. I'm talking about when helping noobs, trying to sound professional. Your diction should depend on the context. Gm apps should be professional. Talking to players professionally isn't necessary but it's a nice touch. BUUUT. It might backfire and here's why:

some players don't understand english very well. Perhaps they know how enough to speak on the basic level, but communicating in a latinate diction may obfuscate what you are trying to say, thus confusing the poor noob even more. It's not that they're stupid, it's just that some players are from other countries.



Protip: If you know another language, flaunt it! a Bilingual GM is a great person to have, due to the fact that not everyone speaks english, and it would be a relief for some players if a GM knew their language.

Protip: Do you live in a different time zone? mention it! if the server is up 24/7, it's important that there's someone on patrol when no one else is!
