MissMel's practice (Updated 8/17) Empty MissMel's practice (Updated 8/17)

Post by MistressMel Wed Aug 15, 2012 6:19 am

About 2 days ago, I learned about sprites and such and was told to go for GFX (Akihiko........ rawr~). In order to do that, I'm pretty sure I'll be needing lots of practice .___.
[Note: I'll be making Persona 3/4 characters]
This took about 1 and 1/2 days. Don't mind the sun lol The sword..... looks like a regular sword. o.O I wanted to make the blade longer, but it looked.. crooked.
Spoiler:

Update (8/17): Here is Akihiko Sanada. A few things I did not add were his gun, belt, bandage and dagger. Hoping I improved a bit on my outline and colors :I
Spoiler:

Would love advice/tip/etc. :3

The hair needs more shading in my opinion ^^
Otherwise, those sprites are really good.

The hair wasn't gradient shading.
It need more contrast on the hair, the hair is too tight for a maple head. (LOL)
The shirt shading is fine but need to improve.

Bad Hair Design. Don't try working on the shading itself first. Experiment with the outline of the hair.

i really like the concept of this Very Happy but the execution is a tad sketchy. unlike the persona 4 arena hair, which lacks actual highlights, maplestory hairstyles usually employ at least 1 shade of highlighting. basically, what i'm saying is instead of just adding shadows to the light gray you use as a base, try and add a lighter shade of grey or even white from the direction light is coming from. other than that, the outfit and weapon look really nice! please finish this, i want to see how it'll look like Very Happy

Hair looks a little too flat. It looks like you just colored the head, and added some lines. Sword should maybe be a bit longer?

You could use some more shading as well.

But taking the "2 days ago" remark, you're off to a good start I guess. Keep practicing!

Yu's hair is a bit flat, without much spikes in his hair. If that's what you meant? Maybe if I used this kind of reference for the hairstyle?
Spoiler:

As for making the sword longer without it looking crooked, Akihiko said to make it straight instead of going diagonal.

not bad, except for the hair.

i think it needs more detail and yes it does look a little flat.

i think he meant 'flat' as in 'lacking dimension/definition'. even hair needs to look a bit 3d to give the impression of bangs/curls/whatever you're going for xD

What is gradient shading?

Its The most hating enemy of spriters. So what is it?

MissMel's practice (Updated 8/17) Rebell10

This is an example of Gradient shading, its what you do when you keep changing a color contrast from bright to low too many time, so lets start like this.

If you are asking your self how to avoid it? lets me show you how.

3 or 4 layer of a color is enough

Brush tool? Hmm... Are you meaning the x part of the hair where his hair fades? Or something else?
Because I've only been using the pencil tool set to 1px on Photoshop. :U
