Gender Specific Roles Empty Gender Specific Roles

Post by Axolotl on Sun Dec 18, 2011 10:13 pm

I start a thread about this on all the forums I join, but this really bugs me.
Surely you've all realized that in today's society, males have to be masculine jocks and females have to be feminine catty princesses. Not only do males and females have to act a certain way, they have to speak a certain way also. If a male says cute or sweet or is romantic, they are a queer. If a female says sick or fuck yeah bro or something, they're a dyke or wanna be male. Also, they have to look a certain way. If a male wears tight jeans or has long hair, they're girly, gay, or queer. If a female wears baggy jeans and doesn't put their hair up or whatever, then they're immediately a tomboy and often outcasted from other females. Then it goes onto how males have to like certain things and same with females and how even colors are gender specific.

Does anyone else see a problem with this? I see a major problem with it. I can sort of understand if males wore tight V-necks and skin tight jeans how that might be pushing it, or if a female burps and has a buzz cut might be pushing it, but to each their own. Even that doesn't deserve all the ridicule it gets.

I personally am a male, and I watch MLP, have long hair, boyish features, I like to do crafts and cook, and I don't limit my vocabulary to "male words" so I say things like cute. I get called a queer and made fun of a lot and so on, and it's not the fact I'm getting picked on that bothers me, it's the fact that society is so focused on these stupid roles.

So, D.Chaos MS forums, what are your views on this?

You'd be surprised at how many who preach that change the way they are naturally because of the roles in society.

I watch MLP, have long hair, cook(a little), like cute things and say sweet things to my girl. I don't see anything wrong with it =/
sure some people may have weird impresions of be but meh they are all too queer to say anything to a guy with my kind of built Very Happy
-workouts ftw-

Being different is what makes you, you. I rather be different then be grouped with a bunch of kids who can't even decide stuff for themselves.

Where's a "Like", "Thanks", or reputation button when you need one? Hehe.
Glad to see this forums isn't y'know, full of bratty teens who see themselves better than everyone.
Well said, too.
Also, I'm adding...

Axolotl ,
when you go to college, I'd suggest taking up Sociology, communication, psychology, and other social science classes. they tend to go in depth about gender issues that permeate our society.
Parents tend to raise their boys and girls to be masculine and feminine respectively , with every toy, tv show, and behavior influencing the child's perception of how they should behave in society.

Now, there are people who have both masculine and feminine traits, and fall under androgyny. Androgynous people tend to have balanced personalities and mindsets, being assertive, but not being too aggressive and competitive which reflects masculinity, and at the same time being compassionate, sympathetic and empathetic, which is of course attributed mainly to femininity .
Masculinity and Femininity have nothing to do with sex (being male or female), it is a concept that our societies have created.

I actually plan on majoring in psychology.
And thank you for the lesson on androgyny ^^
